A B S T R A C T
This article reviews the penal system’s methods in a transitioning society not as modern as subsequently was classified. The Modern Age – in spite of all its cultural transformations, new forms of political, economic and social relations – was characterised by the use of extremely violent punitive methods. Crime and punishment were both sides of the same coin, united by atrocity.
