The purpose of this article is to analyze how the urban reforms that took place in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century were portrayed in the newspapers of other Brazilian states. The press speeches about the remodeling of the then federal capital reinforced its representation as a symbol of the country and were essential for the legitimization of the newly established republican regime and for the construction in society’s imaginary that the country had entered a new era of prosperity.
