Abstract

Nelson Pereira dos Santos’s Rio, 40 graus (1955) was censured and had its release  forbidden  for showing the slums of Brazil’s former capital, Rio de Janeiro. Through the analysis of discourses in favor and against the movie, as well as some of its sequences, this article aims to reflect on the dispute regarding the representation of the city – and of the country –, questioning the idea of “golden years”.
