The realization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games brings challenges and opportunities to the host city/country. The history of the Olympics since Ancient Greece up to the edition to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 is presented in the article. We also discuss the structuring process and organization of the archive of the Autoridade Pública Olímpica, a public inter-federative consortium, which aims to integrate the documentary legacy of the Games.
