The article discusses the Centro de Memória da Educação Física, do Esporte e do Lazer, created in the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in 2001. Based on documents preserved by the Center, we present promising elements related to research on history of sport, taking as a premise the existence of a close link between archival research, necessary to the process of organization of collections, and the historiographical operation.
