Unlike the other eight metropolitan regions (MRs) established in 1973, the MR of Rio de Janeiro was constituted separately, two years later, after the merger of the states of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara. To examine the changes and adjustments in the technical discourse on Rio de Janeiro’s metropolization and its implications, we will focus on the work of geographer Lysia Bernardes in this article.
