Captain Terena José Pedro de Souza and his claim before the Brazilian State: voluntary indigenous participation in the Paraguayan War

Abstract

This article aims to rethink the history of the Paraguayan War, contemplating the indigenous presence and participation in this international conflict. Based on the trajectory of Terena Captain José Pedro de Souza and his petition published on Diário de São Paulo in 1865, we seek to understand how the indigenous people became involved in the conflict and what were their expectations regarding the Brazilian State.
