This text seeks to reflect on the relations between women and politics in Brazilian society. Considering that even nowadays, there are few women whose participation in the country’s political life is widely disseminated and acknowledged, it is enlightening to follow the path of a woman, Alzira Vargas do Amaral Peixoto, who for about a half a century – from the 1940’s to the 1980’s – participated intensively in politics, in an extremely unique way. The major reason for this uniqueness is that she assumed the task of preserving her father’s and her family’s memory, and in so doing, she played a prominent role in preserving the national heritage.
